Can a Country Go
Bankrupt?
Liberal Answers to the
Economic Crisis in Europe

The global financial crisis is a
phenomenon we already got used to. Started in the United States a few years ago
with the bankruptcy of one of the biggest investment banks, it subsequently
spread all over the world causing serious turbulence in structure of the whole
world economy. Currently, there is no country in the world which would not, more
or less, be affected by it.
The "liberal economic system" is
often blamed for causing the crisis. It's the "liberals" who are supposedly
guilty for a dramatic fall of the GDP, increase of unemployment and debt as well
as creation of empty money. However, is this true?
Should we search for the reasons of
the crisis in the liberal approach to economy or elsewhere? Did the governments
which claim to have run a "liberal" economic policy really implement it? Can a
country, in the contemporary world (contemporary European Union), really go
bankrupt? And if so, what can be its implications?
All the abovementioned questions
have been addressed by speakers invited to our last conference entitled Can a Country Go Bankrupt? Liberal Answers to
the Economic Crisis in Europe which
was held
on October 23, 2010 in Radisson BLU hotel, Warsaw. The
conference was organized by the Civic Club Foundation and sponsored by the
Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Liberty, the Dutch Haya Van Someren Foundation.
You can find the conference report
here.
The conference paper is in
preparation and will soon be available
We would like to thank all the
participants and speakers for their in-depth, content-related contribution to
the lively discussion as well as all the sponsor and co-organizers for their
organizational and financial support.
We hope to see you during our next
events!
